Fernstone Retreat

Tucked into a wooded property just outside the city, Fernstone Retreat offers a setting that feels private and intentionally connected to nature. The venue leans into its surroundings rather than separating from them, which gives weddings here a relaxed but thoughtful atmosphere.
The pavilion is the defining feature. A large tree stands at its center, integrated directly into the structure and creating a natural focal point for dinner and dancing. It is a detail guests immediately notice, and it gives the reception space a character you simply do not find in a traditional ballroom. The open-air design keeps the surrounding woods present throughout the evening.
Because the celebration often unfolds outdoors or within the pavilion, careful sound placement ensures music and announcements feel clear without disrupting the setting’s natural feel. When coordinated well, the entire day flows easily from ceremony into a lively reception under the canopy of trees.
Below is a wedding at Fernstone Retreat that shows how this one-of-a-kind pavilion comes to life for a celebration.

Music, Traditions & the Coolest Tree Ever — Rezwan & Michael’s Fernstone Retreat Celebration

There are weddings — and then there are experiences. Rezwan and Michael’s big day was one of those totally one-of-a-kind weddings that you couldn’t replicate even if you tried. Tucked away in the Laurel Highlands at Fernstone Retreat, their celebration was personal, intentional, and overflowing with culture, laughter, and really great music.

The entire day flowed together like a storybook. Their ceremony took place inside the most charming barn — cozy, warm, and full of emotion as their closest friends and family watched them say “I do.” From there, everyone walked over to the pavilion, which has this unforgettable feature — a massive tree straight through the middle of the space, stretching overhead. It felt like nature itself was part of the celebration.

And then came one of the most unique moments of the night — the Persian knife dance. Rezwan’s Matron of Honor stole the cake-cutting knife and danced her way around the room while the couple tried to bribe it back. Everyone in the room was cheering, laughing, clapping — it was such a fun way to kick off the party and a perfect blend of tradition and joy.

When it came to music, Rezwan and Michael were so intentional. They wanted the playlist to make every guest feel included, no matter where they were from or how old they were. That meant weaving together their favorite dance songs with traditional Persian and Kurdish music. And let me tell you — the second those cultural tracks came on, the dance floor exploded. Guests joined hands, formed circles, clapped, and danced with huge smiles — it didn’t matter if they’d heard the music before or not. It was pure happiness.

From start to finish, their wedding felt like them — thoughtful, joyful, a little unexpected in the best ways, and filled with family and tradition. I’m really grateful I got to be part of it and help bring their soundtrack to life. Days like this are exactly why I love being a wedding DJ.
